PARIT BUNTAR, Perak – In a heartwarming and reflective event held during the season of Lent, the Church of Our Lady of Good Health Youth Ministry hosted a meaningful programme called “The Heavy Bag.” The event focused on the spiritual theme of forgiveness, an essential aspect of the Lenten season, which encourages reflection, penance, and reconciliation.
The activity aimed to help participants understand the burden of unforgiveness and how it weighs heavily on our hearts, hindering spiritual growth and peace. During the event, attendees were invited to carry a symbolic “heavy bag,” in which stones were placed. Each stone represented a sin, grudge, or unresolved hurt, symbolising the emotional and spiritual burden we carry when we choose not to forgive.
As participants walked with the heavy bag, they were reminded of how unforgiveness can make life feel unbearable. The exercise helped attendees reflect on the importance of letting go of grudges, forgiving others, and experiencing the peace that forgiveness brings to the soul.
The parish priest, Fr Martin Arlando shared an insightful reflection on the importance of forgiveness, reminding everyone that God forgives us daily, and we, too, are called to forgive those who wrong us. His words were a powerful reminder that forgiveness is not just an act of kindness towards others but also a means of healing for our own hearts.
The light of each candle served as a reminder that even in the darkest moments of life, God’s light is always present, offering us hope and guidance. The flickering flames symbolised the small but powerful steps we take towards personal transformation, as we strive to reflect the love and mercy of Christ. As the candles were lit, it was a collective act of faith, where every participant shared in the hope that Christ brings to our lives.
The lighting of the candles also carried a deeper meaning tied to the themes of forgiveness and healing. During Lent, we are called to forgive others as God has forgiven us. The act of lighting the candle was a representation of how forgiveness can illuminate our hearts, clearing away the burdens of anger, resentment, and unforgiveness. Just as the candlelight dispels darkness, forgiveness dispels the heavy weight of sin and guilt, bringing peace and reconciliation to our souls.
Moreover, the lit candles stood as symbols of renewal. Each flame represented a new beginning, a chance to turn away from past mistakes, and to embrace a path of transformation. Just as the wax of the candle melts and is reformed into a new shape, we too are invited to melt our hardened hearts and allow God’s grace to reshape us during this Lenten season.
The event was followed by a prayer session, where participants offered prayers for healing, reconciliation, and strength to forgive those who had hurt them. The community gathered in unity, reflecting on how forgiveness strengthens not only personal relationships but also our connection with God and others.
“The Heavy Bag” programme was a beautiful and impactful experience for all who attended, providing an opportunity to reflect on their Lenten journey and deepen their faith through the transformative power of forgiveness.
