Tribute from Sisters of St Francis of Sarawak
“The Sisters of St Francis of Sarawak (SSFS) are saddened by the death of Sr Mildred on 10 July 2022. However, we Sisters are grateful to God for taking Sr Mildred home to His Kingdom, and to relieve Sr Mildred of her sufferings. She had been seriously ill with cancer for the past four months.
Sr Mildred attended St Teresa’s School, Kuching, and graduated with the Sarawak Junior Certificate. She entered the Convent in Padungan on 10 January 1959, and was First Professed on 23 August 1961. She taught in St Theresa’s Primary School, Padungan from 1962 to 1992. She later joined Nazareth Day Nursery, Kuching from 1993 to 1998.
Many of her former pupils, especially the tiny tots in the Nursery, today remember Sr Mildred with affection as she loved working with children and treated them with great care and love, and spoiling them with many treats. She was also a good teacher.
Sr Mildred was upgraded as a trained teacher on 23 April 1982, after attending an in-service teachers training course during the school holidays, at Maktab Perguruan Rejang – Masa Cuti.
Many parishioners of St Peter’s Church, Padungan also fondly remember Sr Mildred when she was the Sacristan of St Peter’s Church from 1962 to 1992. She helped in giving religious instruction to school children from 1970 – 1992. She also prepared children for First Holy Communion.
To help with her work in religious instruction, Sr Mildred attended the following courses:-
- Catechesis: 19 Jan 1990 at St Peter’s College, Kuching.
- Evangelisation: 3 weeks – Stages of Growth, Feb – March 1990.
- Evangelisation: 3 weeks – Jan – Feb 1992.
Although Sr Mildred seemed to be running around doing so much work in School and in Church (including the Church garden outside), we can also see her serving her religious duties faithfully.
It was a joy to see her smiling face and to hear her funny stories about the school children, and her work in the church“…..Sisters of St Francis of Sarawak
