The Chancery Office of the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu had released a notice, dated Feb 13, to all parishes informing that, in solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria, whom had suffered tremendous loss caused by the earthquake, and also with the relief workers, 80% of the weekly total collections during Masses on 18 February (Saturday) and 19 February, 2023 (Sunday) shall be contributed to the Kota Kinabalu Archdiocese Relief Fund for Turkey and Syria.
The letter also stated that ‘prayers for the victim and all those involved in the search and rescue operations are to inserted in the Prayer of the Faithful during those Masses.’
Parishes are also being reminded to send in the collection as soon as possible.
According to Reuters, the combined death toll in Turkey and Syria has climbed to more than 41,000 and millions are in need of humanitarian aid, with many survivors having been left homeless in near-freezing winter temperature. Rescues are now few and far between. – Catholic Sabah
