PLENTONG, Johor – As heads of the Church, the arch/bishops play the main role in communicating insightful key messages to their flock and to the society at large.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei (CBCMSB) took the initiative to organize a one-day Media & Crisis Communications Workshop for the bishops together with their respective diocese spokespersons and media teams at MAJODI Centre, Johor on July 10. The media training was conducted by Augustine Anthuvan, one of Singapore’s most experienced communicator and serving now as an independent media consultant, communications advisor and trainer from Singapore, as well as a SIGNIS international member.
Anthuvan said it is important that the prelates and their designated spokesperson be able to respond and give insights to the issues discussed in society in order to help the people shape their understanding and opinions.
The training provided by Anthuvan paved a way, although at a basic level, for the prelates to polish their ability to prepare and deliver key messages to the target audience in various platforms such as in press conference, television, radio, newspaper, and social media.
The training comprised of various exercises using social media, delivering message in front of the camera, small and big mock press conferences on current issues, and one-on-one four-minute studio interview.
A total of 33 participants from the nine arch/dioceses also attended the media training consisting of some vicar generals, communications personnel, and individuals who are assisting the arch/bishops.
