First reading Genesis 1:20-2:4

‘Let us make man in our own image’

God said, ‘Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth within the vault of heaven.’ And so it was. God created great sea-serpents and every kind of living creature with which the waters teem, and every kind of winged creature. God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas; and let the birds multiply upon the earth.’ Evening came and morning came: the fifth day.

God said, ‘Let the earth produce every kind of living creature: cattle, reptiles, and every kind of wild beast.’ And so it was. God made every kind of wild beast, every kind of cattle, and every kind of land reptile. God saw that it was good.

God said, ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that crawl upon the earth.’

God created man in the image of himself,

in the image of God he created him,

male and female he created them.

God blessed them, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and conquer it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven and all living animals on the earth.’ God said, ‘See, I give you all the seed-bearing plants that are upon the whole earth, and all the trees with seed-bearing fruit; this shall be your food. To all wild beasts, all birds of heaven and all living reptiles on the earth I give all the foliage of plants for food.’ And so it was. God saw all he had made, and indeed it was very good. Evening came and morning came: the sixth day.

Thus heaven and earth were completed with all their array. On the seventh day God completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he had rested after all his work of creating.

Such were the origins of heaven and earth when they were created.

Responsorial Psalm 8:4-9

How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth!

When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,

the moon and the stars which you arranged,

what is man that you should keep him in mind,

mortal man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him little less than a god;

with glory and honour you crowned him,

gave him power over the works of your hand,

put all things under his feet.

All of them, sheep and cattle,

yes, even the savage beasts,

birds of the air, and fish

that make their way through the waters.

You get round the commandment of God to preserve your own tradition

The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture:

This people honours me only with lip-service,

while their hearts are far from me.

The worship they offer me is worthless,

the doctrines they teach are only human regulations.

You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions.’ And he said to them, ‘How ingeniously you get round the commandment of God in order to preserve your own tradition! For Moses said: Do your duty to your father and your mother, and, Anyone who curses father or mother must be put to death. But you say, “If a man says to his father or mother: Anything I have that I might have used to help you is Corban (that is, dedicated to God), then he is forbidden from that moment to do anything for his father or mother.” In this way you make God’s word null and void for the sake of your tradition which you have handed down. And you do many other things like this.’

Reflection
Genesis 1,20-2,4a, Mark 7:1-13

“The heart is what matters, not external practice”
In the gospel of today, Jesus had strong words to the religious leaders who placed human tradition above the commandment of God, which is the law of love. He called these people hypocrites because He knew that their hearts were far from loving and serving God. Sometimes, we can be so caught with following external observances and even used them to judge and criticize others for being religious or not. Jesus invites us not to lose sight of what is most essential to our faith, which is to cultivate a heart of love, i.e. a life of compassion, mercy, forgiveness, respect, etc, more than simply focusing on external behaviours and formal religious practices.

As we reflect on this gospel, let us humbly ask for the grace not to forget that, for God, it is the heart that matters most. We are called to love God, love others as we love ourselves!

Questions for reflection:
Is my heart far from God? What is Jesus’ message to me in this time of silent prayer?

Kejadian 1,20-2,4a, Markus 7:1-13
“Hati lebih penting, bukannya amalan luaran”
Dalam injil hari ini, Yesus menggunakan kata-kata yang keras kepada para pemimpin agama yang menempatkan tradisi manusiawi melebihi hukum Allah iaitu hukum kasih. Dia memanggil mereka hipokrit kerana Dia mengetahui hati mereka yang jauh dari mengasihi dan melayani Allah. Kadang kala, kita terperangkap dengan mengikuti ketaatan luaran malah menggunakannya untuk menghakimi dan mengkritik orang lain. Yesus menjemput kita untuk tidak melupakan apa yang paling asas dalam iman kita iaitu memelihara hati yang mengasihi, iaitu hidup berbelas kasih, mengampuni, menghormati dan sebagainya, dan tidak hanya berfokus kepada tingkah laku luaran dan amalan kerohanian formal.
Pada saat kita merenungkan injil hari ini, marilah dengan rendah hati mohon rahmat untuk tidak melupakan bahawa bagi Allah, apa yang paling penting adalah hati. Kita dipanggil untuk mencintai Allah dan orang lain sebagaimana kita mengasihi diri kita sendiri.

Soalan renungan:
Adakah hati saya jauh dari Tuhan? Apakah pesan Yesus kepada saya hari ini?

Pemungkal 1:20-2,4a; Mark 7:1-13

“Ukai pengawa ari luar tang ari ati.”
Dalam Injil saritu, Jesus nekan bala pemesai pengarap Judah ti ngangkat ka adat mensia lebih agi ari Perintah Allah Taala kelebih agi Perintah Pengerindu. Iya ngangau sida tu orang pengelakar laban Iya nemu isi ati sida jauh ari pengerindu sereta ketegal Allah Taala. Kitai mega ulih nyadi bansa nya lalu ngakim enggau bejako ngelakar laban orang lurus tauka enda. Jesus ngangau kitai awak meda utai ti amat beguna dalam pengarap kitai, ngembuan ati pengerindu enggau nyadi sinu, bepengasih, bebasa sereta macam agi jauh ari pengawa ti tampak dipeda sereta atur adat dalam pengarap.

Dalam kitai belematika Injil saritu, aram kitai minta enggau ati baruh ka nimet awak ngasai Allah Taala siko aja ti beguna dalam pengidup kitai. Kitai dikangau awak rinduka Allah Taala, rindu orang bukai baka kitai rindu ka diri!

Bisi ati aku jauh ari Allah Taala? Nama pesan Jesus ka aku dalam awak sembiang tu?

省思
《创一：二十-二：4a》
《谷七：1-13》

“至关重要的是心，不是外在的习俗”

在今天的福音篇章里，耶稣对于宗教领袖，把人们的传统习俗置于比天主的诫命——爱的诫命，较高的地位有着强烈的措辞。祂把他们称为虚伪的人，因为祂知道他们的心远离了爱及不侍奉天主。我们有时候会很执着于外在的仪式，甚至以这些仪式来断定及批评他们是遵守信仰的人或者不是。耶稣要求我们不要对于什么是信德至关重要的事项而失去焦点，那就是培养仁爱的心，举例：富有同情心、怜悯、宽恕、尊重等等良好价值观的生命，更胜于仅是聚焦于外在的行为及正规的信仰习俗。

当我们反省这篇福音，让我们谦逊地寻求恩宠，好使得我们不会忘却，为了天主，心才是至关重要的。我们受到的召唤是爱天主、爱众人，就像是爱自己那样！

省思题：
我的心是否远离天主呢？耶稣在这一次默祷里给予我什么信息呢？
