KOTA KINABALU – The St Simon Catholic Church Likas community here joyously celebrated the Malaysia Day Mass with a dignified flag-raising ceremony on 17 Sep 2023 to commemorate the 60th year of the formation of Malaysia on 16 Sep 1963.
Presided by assistant parish priest, Fr Rhobby Mojolou, both Sunday morning Masses were celebrated in the national language, Bahasa Malaysia, creating a unifying experience for all in attendance.
Fr Rhobby urged the parishioners to continue to pray for the country’s peace and tolerance, especially among the multiracial and multi-religious community.
Fr Rhobby also said that matters of Church and politics should not be mixed, as he reflected on the Gospel reading for the day taken from Mark 12:17 “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. And they were amazed at him.”
Following the inspiring Sunday Masses, the congregation gathered at the flagpoles outside the Church; their hearts filled with pride and reverence to sing the national and state anthems, “NegaraKu” and “Sabah Tanah AirKu”, led by the Choir. It was a heartfelt display of patriotism and unity on that special day.
