KOPUNGIT, Kota Kinabalu – Kampung Kopungit nestled above the hill, which overlooks the sprawling city below, provided a profound sense of community and faith. The occasion was a special outreach program designed to introduce newly baptized to the city’s hidden Church and building relations amongst both parishes.
The program began with the 10:00 am Mass at St John the Baptist Church, gracefully conducted in Kadazan and Bahasa Malaysia by Fr Jeffri Gumu. The Mass which coincided with World Communications Day and Mother’s Day, provided a thematic backdrop to Fr Jeffri’s homily. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and modern communication methods, especially social media, for evangelism while reminding everyone of the irreplaceable value of face-to-face interactions, especially in the families.
Following the Mass, a fellowship gathering took place in the church’s humble gathering hall. It was a heartwarming scene as members came together in unity and celebration. Jeannette Ewang, Catechetical Coordinator from Stella Maris Parish, presented Rosary Booklets to the Parish Pastoral Council Chairman, Wilson William, symbolizing the shared faith and dedication among the congregants, and a brand-new gas stove, donated by the Neophytes, to the Church which was accepted by Catholic Women’s League, Suzie Lawrance. The fellowship was further sweetened by a Mother’s Day celebration, complete with a cake-cutting ceremony that not only honoured all mothers present but also cemented the day as a memorable one for everyone involved.
This visit was not just a mere social call but a profound experience that highlighted the deep connections within the church community, bridging geographical and cultural divides. It served as a reminder of the power of faith in bringing people together, the importance of maintaining personal connections despite the ease of digital communication, and the joy of celebrating significant moments as a united community.
